Myungrang Hotdog Franchise Cost: Korea vs US

Myungrang Hotdog (명랑시대쌀핫도그), founded in Busan in July 2016 and operated by the Myungrangsidae food-service youth cooperative, is one of Korea's best-known corn-dog franchises, built on made-to-order rice-flour corn dogs with cheese and other fillings. The brand passed 1,000 Korean stores by September 2018 [3] and ran roughly 550 outlets in Korea plus about 40 overseas across seven countries as of early 2024 [3]. If you are comparing Korean corn-dog franchises, Myungrang is an unusual case: it has disclosed cost figures under two very different regimes — Korea's KFTC franchise-disclosure system and, until recently, a US Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD). This guide lays out what each figure covers and why the two are not directly comparable.

Myungrang Hotdog at a glance

  • Founded in Busan in July 2016; operated by the Myungrangsidae food-service youth cooperative [3]
  • Roughly 550 stores in Korea and about 40 overseas, spanning seven countries as of early 2024 [3]
  • Product is made-to-order rice-flour corn dogs — a compact takeout/kiosk format, not a dine-in build
  • In 2024 the brand shifted its US business from a master franchisee (Myungrang America LLC) to direct headquarters investment [3]

Korea franchise costs

In Korea, franchise costs are disclosed through the Korea Fair Trade Commission's mandatory information-disclosure system (정보공개서). On a 2022 disclosure-based breakdown, Myungrang's initial franchise fee (가맹비) is ₩5,500,000 [1].

Total startup cost is reported at ₩39,710,000 [1] on a 7-pyeong basis and — critically — excluding real estate. That figure comes before the premises deposit and key money (권리금), which in Korea are often the single largest outlay and swing widely by neighborhood. The small footprint reflects the format: Myungrang stores are compact takeout counters rather than dine-in restaurants.

United States franchise costs

Myungrang also filed a US FDD, but through a master franchisee rather than the Korean parent. Under the 2021 FDD filed by Myungrang America LLC — the California-registered subfranchisor — total initial investment ranged from $188,793 [2] to $525,468 [2]. That spread reflects location size, market, and build-out condition, so where a specific project lands depends heavily on real-estate and construction quotes. Around the time of the 2024 change the brand counted about 14 US stores across Atlanta, California, Arizona, Nevada and Saipan [3].

One caveat is specific to this brand. The 2021 FDD describes a master-franchise structure the company has since discontinued: in 2024 Myungrang replaced Myungrang America LLC with direct headquarters investment [3]. Current US terms would therefore be set by the Korean parent and are not captured by that 2021 filing. Treat the US range as historical unless you confirm it against a current document.

Three things to keep in mind before reading across the table:

  • The scopes differ. The Korean total excludes the real-estate deposit and key money [1]; the US FDD range handles real estate its own way. Neither number is "everything you will spend."
  • Currency and format differ. Convert at current exchange rates yourself rather than trusting any published conversion. Korean stores are small takeout counters while US builds tend to be larger — a structural reason the US totals run higher.
  • Vintages differ, and the US structure changed. The Korean figures are 2022 [1]; the US range is a 2021 filing [2] from a master franchisee the brand has since dropped [3]. Every figure here predates the current setup and should be re-confirmed.

How to verify

Before deciding anything, confirm each figure in the franchisor's current disclosure rather than a third-party summary. In Korea, pull Myungrang's latest 정보공개서 from the KFTC franchise-disclosure system. For the United States, request the most recent FDD directly from the Korean headquarters, since the 2021 Myungrang America document no longer reflects how the brand franchises there. The only binding numbers are those in the disclosure document and franchise agreement you are actually offered — this guide, like any summary, can lag the latest filing.

Figures are historical, come from the named source, and are not a promise or projection of your results. Costs and outcomes vary by market, site and operator.
